House rules
The rules of the hall
Chalked by the door, repeated at the teaching table and applied the same way for regulars and strangers alike.
The four essentials
If you read nothing else
Age
Eighteen and over across the whole building, dining room included. ID may be asked for at any point.
Money
None goes on a table. No stake, no buy-in, no side bet and no pot at any game we run.
Machines
There are none on the premises, and no plan to install any.
Online
Nothing to log into. No app, no account and no internet room — only this address.
At the tables
How play is kept straight
- Counters belong to the hall, are lent for the evening and are collected at close.
- If money appears on a table the hand ends; if it happens twice, so does the evening.
- We supply the cards and change them weekly; personal decks stay in pockets.
- The floor may reseat players so tables stay even, and asks rather than orders.
- Score pads are binned at close: nothing carries over to the following week.
In the building
Everyone else's evening
- Keep the volume under the stone — limestone carries sound further than you would think.
- The templates on the north wall stay where they are. Photograph them all you like.
- Ask before photographing anyone at a table that is not your own.
- Calls are taken in the lane door, not in the hall.
- The bar stops serving when someone has had enough, and a car is called whether or not it is requested.
